Charles' law definition
Charles' law (sometimes called the law of volumes), describes the relationship between the thickness of gas with its temperature when both the pressure and the mass of the gas are constant. It states that has a volume proportional to absolute temperature.
You can also write Charles' law in other ways. For example, the ratio between the volume and temperature of a gas in a closed system remains constant so long as the pressure does not change. Use our ratio calculator to find out more about how to do ratios.
Charles' law describes what happens to an ideal gas during an isobaric procedure. It means that the pressure stays constant during the transition.
How does Charles' law apply in real life?
Charles' law is applicable in many different areas. Here's a list of some of the most well-known and fascinating examples.
You have probably seen a balloon flight in the air at least once in your entire life. Did you ever wonder how they can fly and why they have firewood or other heating sources? Charles' law has the solution! when air is heated, it increases. In other words, the same volume (mass of gas) occupies more space. The density also decreases. The balloon will begin to float because of the buoyancy of the surrounding atmosphere. While steering in any particular direction is likely to be different, the overall concept of the up-and-down movement can still be explained by Charles' law.
Liquid nitrogen experiments - Have you ever seen a balloon placed in a container filled with liquid nitrogen and then moved out? First, it shrinks regardless of its size at the beginning. After it is released, it returns to its initial condition. It is important to remember that volume changes with temperature.
Thermometer - As demonstrated in the previous sections, it's possible to create a device that measures temperature according to Charles' law. Even though we need to be aware that the limitations of Charles' law are essential object's tensile strengths and resistance to high heat, it is possible to invent a new device that suits our needs. This Charles' law calculator can help you determine the outcome if you are unsure.
