Methodology of Crosswind Calculator
Vector notation and the scalar dots product are the most reliable and efficient ways to calculate the head/tail wind, crosswind component and runway heading.
Notation in Vector and Scalar
Scalar and vector quantities are mathematical formulas that help us model the physical quantities in the world. AeroToolbox.com has a separate post that explains the differences between vector quantities and scalar amounts in greater detail. For the purposes of this calculation however, it suffices to say that there is one fundamental difference between a vector and scalar quantity:
A vector quantity is a quantity that needs both a magnitude as well as a direction in order to fully describe.
A scalar quantity refers to a quantity that can only be described using magnitude.
Temperature is an example of a scalar quantity. It would be pointless to attempt to describe the temperature outside in terms of any direction.
Wind speed, or more accurately the wind velocity, can only be described by quoting both the windspeed (magnitude), and the prevailing winds direction. This is especially important in aeronautics, where the wind direction is critical to everything from choosing the right runway to land from to fuel management and flight planning.
You can also describe a runway in vector notation. A runway has a length (magnitude), and a heading (direction).
It is possible to solve the problem of computing the components of the prevailing winds relative to runway heading by representing wind and runway as two vectors, and finding the angle between them. This can be done easily using the scaler dot product.
Scalar Dot Product
It is possible to write the dot product of A and B vectors. AB (read as A dotB and is used to indicate the magnitude of vector). A multiplied by the volume of the component B in the direction of A.
How to use the crosswind component chart
These are the steps to use a crosswind chart:
Find the line that represents the angle between your direction and wind direction. It should be between 0 to 90 degrees.
Continue following this line until you reach the correct windspeed (the arches indicate the wind speed).
Continue straight down from this point to locate the crosswind component. Turn left to find headwind component.
What is the difference between tailwind and headwind
Headwind and tailwind are components of wind. The wind blowing in the direction of travel is tailwind. Headwind blows in opposite direction. Crosswind is another component of wind. It blows on the opposite side of an object.
