Pyramid volume formula
A pyramid is a combination of a polygonal base with an apex to form a polyhedron. The basic formula to calculate pyramid volume is the exact same as that for a cone.
volume = (1 / 3) base_area * height
height: Refers to the height at the base and the apex.
This formula works for all types of base polygons, oblique pyramids, and right pyramids. These two values are all you need to know - the base area and the height. Many other formulas can be used if you don't know your base area. The equation can be used for any pyramid that has a regular base.
volume = n / 12 * height * side_length^2 / cot (π / n)
n: Refers to the number of sides built on regular polygons.
Geometry Pyramids
The triangular sides of pyramids are a geometrical feature. They connect at the top (apex).
A square pyramid is one that has four sides and a base square.
A tetrahedron is one that has three sides and a triangular basis.
Pyramids of the Ancient World
For thousands of years, humans have used pyramid-shaped structures to create their own architectures.
Mesopotamians are believed to have built the first pyramid structures in the area around 5000 BC. These structures were called ziggurats. Also, pyramid structures such as those found in Caral Peru date back to this period.
Ancient Egyptian Pyramids
The pyramid structures of pyramids most well-known are the ancient Egyptian pyramids.
Many of the pyramids in Ancient Egypt were built to serve as tombs for Pharaohs or their families.
Egypt is home to more than 130 pyramids.
The Pyramid of Djoser is the first Egyptian pyramid. It was built in Saqqara 4650 years ago (2640 BC).
The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the three giant pyramids of the Giza Necropolis.
Also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, this is the oldest of the Ancient Wonders of the World. It is the only one that remains largely intact.
Aztec Pyramids and Mayan Pyramids
Most Aztec and Mayan pyramids were step pyramids with temples on the top.
The Mayan civilization spread from Southern Mexico to the northern part of Central America.
Mayan pyramids date back approximately 3000 years.
Central Mexico's Aztec pyramids date back around 600 years.
El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulkan (or the Temple of Kukulkan), is probably the most famous Mayan pyramid. It is found in Chichen Itza, Mexico, and attracts more than 1 million tourists every year.
The Great Pyramid of Cholula in Puebla, Mexico's largest volumetric pyramid.
Modern Pyramids
There are many structures today that can be compared to the pyramids of Egypt.
One large glass pyramid is found in Paris's Louvre.
The Palace of Peace and Reconciliation is a 62-meter high pyramid in Astana (Kazakhstan).
The Luxor Hotel Las Vegas, a 30-story pyramid with over 4000 rooms, is home to the Luxor Hotel.
The Slovak Radio Building is located in Bratislava in Slovakia. Its shape is an inverted (or upside down) pyramid.
