The volume of a sphere V is the area enclosed by a sphere. For example, it can be the space that a substance (solids, liquids, or gases) can occupy. Its length is expressed as cubic units, e.g. cubic meters m^3 or cubic feet cu ft.
These equations can be used to calculate the volume of a sphere:
Given radius : V = 4 / 3 * π * r^3
Given size: V = 1 / 6 * π * d^3
Given area: V = √ ( A^3 / ( 36 * π ) )
Ratio surface to volume
It is interesting to note that the globe has the largest volume of all closed surfaces with the same surface area. The surface-to-volume ratio A / V is relatively high in comparison to other figures. It is easy to find an explicit formula to calculate the surface-to-volume ratio. The area is 4 * π * r^2, and the volume is 4 / 3 * π * r^3.
V = ( 4 * π * r^2) / ( 4 / 3 * π * r^3) = 3 / r or, if radius is half the diameter r = d / 2, then A / V = 6 / d
Sphere Facts
Sphere is perfectly symmetrical
All points above the surface have a similar distance "r” from centre
Sphere does not have edges. vertices (corners).
Sphere has one Surface It is not a "face", as it's not flat.
For a minor surface, a most significant volume.
A sphere is the most surface-efficient shape of all. It can also have the largest volume for a fixed area.
Example: When you blow up a balloon, it will naturally form a sphere. This is because it wants to hold as much air as it can with the as little surface. To see the results, press the Play button.
Nature of a sphere
When a surface needs to be as small and compact as possible, the sphere is what you see in nature. Bubbles and water drops are two examples.
