What is running pace?

In running, pace is usually defined as number of minutes it takes cover a kilometer or mile. You can think pace like a speedometer in your car. Instead of measuring how many kilometers or miles you're moving in an hour, pace is expressed in minutes per kilometer or mile.

Why do runners use pace to measure speed?

Pace gives you an immediate sense for how long it takes to cover distances in your runs. Pace numbers is more satisfying than kilometers per hour (or miles per hour). Running a kilometer in 4:00 feels like more of an achievement than running a kilometer at 14 kph. Also popular races like 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers are completed under an hour, which makes using pace more applicable.
