What is the importance of the waist-hip ratio?
The ratio of waist to hip is generally used as a measure of health and risk factors for serious conditions like diabetes, asthma, or Alzheimer’s disease. Research has shown that those who have "apple-shaped bodies" (with more weight around their waist) are more at risk than those who have "pear-shaped bodies" with more weight around their hips.
Obesity is measured by the waist-hip ratio. According to the WHO, abdominal obesity can be defined as a waist-hip ratio of 0.90 in males and 0.85 in females.
An alternative way to measure obesity is the absolute waist circumference of a person who is over 40 inches (102 cm) for men and 35 in (88cm) for women.
How do you measure your waist and hips?
It is more complex than you may think. These are the two options we suggest:
The WHO data gathering protocol states that the waist circumference should measure at the midpoint of the last palpable bone and the top iliac crest. This measurement should be done using stretchy tape. The hip circumference should be measured at the largest part of the buttocks with the tape parallel to the floor.
The measurements are taken at the narrowest part of your natural waist, often just above the belly button, and usually the largest part of the hips or buttocks.
What does the waist-to-hip ratio calculator do?
The waist-hip ratio can be calculated by dividing the waist measurement by the hip measurement which would be W/H. For example, someone with a 28-inch (71 cm) waist and 35-inch (89 cm) hips would have a 0.8 waist-hip ratio.
