What is BMI or body mass index?

Body mass index (BMI) is a simple measurement to calculate the health of a person based on their height and weight. BMI is inteded to quantify tissue mass.
BMI is widely is widely used as a general indicator if a person has a healthy weight compared to their health. BMI value is used to categorize if a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. BMI category depends on the calculated value. From below you can see what values correspond to which category.
Please note that BMI is just a general guideline, and person's age and other fitness has to be taken into account. BMI is not the only measurement of healthy body.

How to calculate Body mass index?

Body mass index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. The formula for BMI isin
BMI = kg/m2
In the formula kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.
A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is from 18.5 to 24.9. BMI applies to most of the adults who are from 18 to 65 years old.

Who shouldn't use BMI?

BMI is not good for everyone. Results can should not be taken seriously if you are a muscle builder, a long distance athlete, a pregnant women, or an old or young person. This is because BMI doesn't know how to differentiate between muscle and fat, or other qualities in persons body.

BMI values for adults

The World Health Organization's (WHO) recommends the following BMI values for adults. These values can be used is used for both men and women, from 18 years to 65 years.

Severe Thinness < 16
Moderate Thinness 16 - 17
Mild Thinness 17 - 18.5
Normal 18.5 - 25
Overweight 25 - 30
Obese Class I 30 - 35
Obese Class II 35 - 40
Obese Class III > 40

Why BMI is not always good?

Eventhough BMI is very widely used for general indicator of healthy body weight, it is not always perfect. BMI can not take into account the body composition, as the numbers can not tell if a person has muscles or fat. Also for example bone mass affects a lot into BMI calculation.

Should I use BMI value?

BMI is pretty good indication of a body fat for most of the population. It gives you a general idea how your body weight is, but it shouldn't be the only measurement. A good measurement along with BMI is looking into mirror and thinking how you feel in your body.
